Holiness Through Adversity
Dave explained that there are four elements to Hebrews Chapter 12, a book full of wisdom. However, he would speak, not on the last two (the old covenant given on Mt Sinai, and the unshakeable kingdom), but on adversity that leads to righteousness/holiness and the self-discipline that is required to overcome adversity in that journey to meet God. Hebrews 12:1 says “....and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Then, in verses 5 and 6, the author quotes the encouragement of Proverbs 3:11 and 12 in which the Lord disciplines and corrects those He loves as sons (and daughters).

Faith - sure in hope, certain of the unseen.
Sean opened by inviting us to consider who are our contemporary heroes of the Christian faith. The reason for doing this became clear as church members read out loud to the congregation the whole of chapter 11 of Hebrews, which is one of Sean's favourite books of the bible. The whole of this chapter is like a synopsis of the old testament highlighting all of the great men and women of faith from Abel to the last of the prophets. These men and women were commended by God because they operated in faith without any of them ever receiving the treasure promised by God as their reward for being faithful. For this reward, they were to wait until the final day of judgement when we will all be together and God could, only then, give them and us that better thing He had planned - to make us perfect.

The Triumphal Entry
Known as Palm Sunday, today was marked by Steve describing Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on his final journey. Jesus' followers believed in the miracles he had performed and were joyful as they walked with Jesus. However, the expectation of some of his Jewish followers for the Messiah to arrive was very different from reality. Two miles from the city gates, Jesus commanded his disciples to go ahead and get a donkey for him to ride in victory but, also, in humility (this, in accordance with prophecy). The mis-understanding Jews expected the Messiah to arrive, dramatically defeat the Romans and instantly free the Jews from the occupying forces. God, however, had other ideas!
