Disciples Making A Difference

What a joy to be leading Jubilee!

The writer to the Hebrews coaches the church on how to treat leaders.  Eugene Peterson captures the phase well when he translates Hebrews 13:17 “Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its drudgery.”    At the end of our Vision Sunday, I am so thankful that I can wholeheartedly say leading Jubilee is not a drudge, but a joy!

In this next season ‘discipleship’ is the key word.  We want to train, encourage and support disciples to make a difference - a difference in their homes, at work, at times of leisure, and even at the shops.  After all, if our faith in Jesus doesn’t make a difference what sort of faith is it?

And it’s a positive difference - bringing love and joy and peace, showing compassion and mercy and forgiveness.  Expressions of grace I suppose!

Tim Keller finishes his fabulous book The Reason for God with a chapter entitled ‘The Dance of God’.  He paints a wonderful picture of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit orbiting each other with an ‘other-centeredness’ and so creating a beautiful ‘dance’.  In contrast he suggests WE often become ‘stationary’, wanting everything and everybody to orbit us.  “Nothing makes us more miserable than self-absorption, the endless, unsmiling concentration on our needs, wants, treatment, ego and record”.   He goes on to say that when we do this we have ‘lost the dance’ suggesting “...the dance of joyful, mutual self-giving relationships is impossible in a world where everyone is stationary, trying to get everything to orbit around them.”

Well this is season to dance!  Disciples making a difference are those who don’t want to be stationery, but are those who join the ‘dance’ and in doing so find God.
